Grand Empire Records/Dillie; 2013
Dir. Edu Gee
Last year saw a metamorphosis of Calvo Mistari’s musical style. He was a bit more exploitative and this paid dividends in the name of two party hits Downlow/Kumbelala and Lose Control featuring his frequent collaborator HB. This was followed up with Mwanaume Ni Effort earlier this year which didn’t quite strike a chord as well as the previous two singles. Anyway, one could tell that part of his focus has also graduated to getting collaborations with artists who can provide the great backing vocals he needs to polish his tracks. This led to our introduction to Nessa who handled the Kumbelala chorus and backing vocals superbly, later appearing on DJ Nruff’s Doin’ It Right. This time he has enlisted Tusker Project Fame 3‘s finalist Patricia Kihoro for his latest single Loving Wrong.
The track is your standard love-hate song, however, the production makes it stand out instantly. Dillie, the producer, deserves a serious hat-tip – he comes up with back-to basics beats with that very distinct sound of 90s house music, the type you’d hear in tracks by the likes of Crystal Waters. Patricia Kihoro stays in character with the backdrop created by the instrumentals and gives a perfect vocal performance here and completes the 90s house mood and feel. Calvo Mistari rides atop all the awesomeness with some decent and pretty straightforward bars, with half the job ready done.
Edu Gee comes up with a stylish, crisp video mainly shot on location at the Sierra Lounge and Brasserie. It’s a well shot video, serves its purpose albeit with the pretty thin concept. The cornerstone of this track is the Patricia’s vocal presence and the great musical production that completely stands out from any current hit offerings.
Well, Loving Wrong is one of those standout tunes this year. Calvo’s selections for collaborations continues being spot on. We cannot wait to get more material from Patricia who is apparently working on a joint album with Diana Nduba.
