New Music: Blinky Bill, Maia & The Big Sky, Abbas Kubaff, Stacy Kamatu, Ayano + High Renaissance

It’s yet another day full of new, not-so-new and buzzing music releases from around and about the Kenyan scene. Let’s get right into it:

Blinky Bill – Cc God ft. Owuor Arunga & Sage

Blinky Bill has just released the intro track to his upcoming full length album, Everyone’s Just Winging It And Other Fly Tales. Featuring Owuor Arunga on trumpets and Sage on vocals, Cc God doesn’t give away much in the way of lyrical content, but signals that we could be in for an exhilarating ride once the album is unleashed.

Abbas Kubaff – Ukweli ft Sebby

Hopping on a delectable beat which samples Al Green’s Love and HappinessAbbas dishes out some home truths on this track. Addressing us from all levels, from individual responsibility for our own life’s choices to a community’s collective responsibility for the state of their governance, Abbas doesn’t mince his words. Accepting and understanding truth is the best medicine.

Maia & The Big Sky’s New Album

Maia von Lekow released her second album Maia & The Big Sky on October 7, 2017, this time co-opting her Big Sky band into the title. Besides Lola, the album features ten other new tracks. Maia has been kind enough to drop a sampler to the album, and its phenomenal. Buy the album on Apple Music, Bandcamp,  Amazon or Mookh.

Stacy Kamatu – Way You Move

Last year, Kahvinya, Nuru, and Suzziah emerged at the top of the ever growing list of new female singing/songwriting talent. This year seems to be Stacy Kamatu’s year. Starting off strong with Coka MucieKilio and On Fire, the Soundcloud community sat up and  took immediate notice. Her latest release Way You Move is a silky smooth tune with just the right amount of funk.

Ayano – Both of Me

The other new-ish voice to look out for is Ayano Gatuiku. If War Letters featuring Lee Oyugi doesn’t draw you in to her thoughtful lyrics yet, take a load of Both of Me. Her latest release is “Inspired by the being of two people. The having of two hearts. The being split down the middle.” Absolutely beautiful.

High Renaissance – Forgery of Venus Freestyle

Ongata Rongai based rapper High Renaissance flexes his lyrical muscles on this pretty entertaining freestyle and lays some more than decent bars in the process.
