Two very significant compilations of music are set to be released very soon from local talent. Both of them have the potential of adding some new value to the Kenyan music scene. First up is femcee Wangechi who is making finishing touches to her debut mixtape called Consume: Chakula Ya Soul.We have already listened to two tracks off the mixtape and know that it is going to be based on classic and popular old school jams plus a few original tunes, hopefully. Well, we don’t have to wait very long to gauge Wangechi;s full potential. She announced yesterday through an announcement video directed by Zack Adell of Authentic Visuals Media that the her label, Provoke Music/ Kaka Empire, will drop the mixtape this month. Check out the vid and her flow over beats from the Digable Planets’ classic Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like That):
More exciting however is that one of our favourite electronic/house collectives, the Elcetrique DJs & The Beat Parade Band are working on an ALBUM with maestro producer Jaaz Odongo called The Journey: A Tribe Called Africa. The plan is to fuse African musical influences with their experience in electronic and house music and a bit of Jaaz’s soulful touch to come up with pure afro-eargasms. They are working with talent such as Nina Ogot,Sage,Camp Mulla’s Tiao Tripper, Dela, Fena, Makadem, Nameless and Wendy Kimani. This bring to memory the very first Ogopa DJs compilation album, Ogopa 1 which took the country by storm – there is no doubt that The Journey will also be a significant milestone in the Kenyan music scene. It;s about damn time some serious house music came out of here! Three teaser tracks were released on SoundCloud for your listening pleasure:
The first single and video off The Journey called Brikicho which features Fena Gitu will be released today at the Treehouse Club – Museum Hill,Nairobi at 9PM. If you have the time there is no reason why you shouldn’t be there. The entrance is free. Fena and her band will be playing there too, as a bonus.
